When you think of Thanksgiving dinner most people think of cooking a turkey – think of it – one roasted in the oven. After all, turkey is the star of the show! But Thanksgiving is not a one man show. Just like a good movie, play or book, the supporting cast of characters has a huge role in making it a Thanksgiving dinner to remember or just another dinner.

And when you plan your Thanksgiving dinner menu, make sure you have a variety of foods incorporating different colors, taste, textures and temperatures to fill your guest’s plates. Depending on the number of guests you may want to serve one or more of these choices: For potatoes at a large dinner I make both Sweet Potatoes and a Creamy Mash Potato recipe. If it is an intimate dinner, I serve a roasted turkey breast with Twice Baked Potatoes. As far as green salads go, I like to make an Apple & Spinach Salad with a sweet cider dressing. Fresh Green Beans with Lemon and Almonds, Maple Glazed Carrots and Marinated Asparagus all complement the meal. You will want to have a Cranberry Relish on your table and maybe a Cranberry Salad too. They are all load with flavor and a healthy choice for your table. Last but not least, don’t forget the stuffing. I make a traditional Sage Stuffing that is part of my family tradition, always a hit!

I’ve found some marvelous giraffe gifts! Before I came across the magic zoo, the best giraffe earrings, charms and so forth came from a recent trip to Africa. I was pleased to find an American artist who seems to have just the right touch to create an (essentially) giraffe figurine somewhere between whimsical and realistic. My wife is an interior design student who practices everything she learns at our house. I cannot tell you how many rooms I have painted and moved furniture around in. But this year, it was the yard that has been our biggest challenge. Some of our favorite family dishes have always been casseroles.  I remember my mom would make a casserole at least every week, sometimes it was something pretty basic like a tuna-mac casserole made with tuna, macaroni and cheese – not my favorite since I never enjoyed how the canned tuna tasted when it was warm. One of the joys of shopping for gifts and outdoor treasures is finding all the fun new statues, gnomes and gazing balls that are out on the market this year.  One of my favorite finds has been a beautiful parrot and berries bowl with a rustic natural iron finish.   It is 11″ in diameter and 6″ high and is simply stunning.  It fits in with my patio and garden decorations and is very feminine in design but has a masculine feel due to the material and the guys like this one too.  I personally love this kind of paring as it makes a very interesting piece that everyone can enjoy. Wolves are such marvelous animals. No wonder so many artists have their own version of them. The Magic Zoo sterling silver wolf earrings are some of those most aesthetic I’ve come across in a long time. There’s an expression on their faces that is both wild and intelligent; I can’t quite put my finger on what it is but it is immensely appealing to me.
