Protect Your Indoor Bonsai Trees from Cool Summer Nights
Not only do the English enjoy a worldwide reputation as rabidly enthusiastic gardeners but their close ties all though history to places on the continent with much warmer climates than their own make me think they were probably the first to try to take warm weather plants and winter them indoors to nurse them past the season of frosts. Maybe it’s just a silly romantic notion, but even that fits, because it takes a romantic to delight in filling up your home with something as ethereal as tropical flowering bonsai trees.
They’ll be healthier though if you’re able to bring them outside in the summer. Some might argue that a summer outside makes the dark and usually very dry winter spent indoors an even greater contrast that would do harm to the tree, but I disagree. However to get the most benefit for your indoor bonsai tree in bring it outside for the summer, you simply must be sure to get it back inside before the weather starts to cool and drops below the point where it is comfortable. Depending on the type of tree, a night spent in the low 50’s could seriously damage your bonsai, so don’t think that just because it’s frost free you’re ok.
